Placement Peer Mentoring


Get support as you prepare to go on placement.

A Placement Mentor is a student who has recently started or completed their placement, supporting students through the placement process. You can talk to your mentor about a wide variety of topics, including:

  • How to find placement opportunities
  • Applying for placements
  • Preparing for interviews and assessment centres
  • Getting ready to go on placement
  • What support will be available when you are on placement

The scheme is opt-in and you can choose a mentor via our Q&A events. If you are unsure who you want as a mentor, you can also request a random mentor from your department.

This scheme is currently aimed at students who go on a 1 year placement during their role. Students studying Business can access support through their peer mentor during their first year. 

Placement Q&A Events

Q&A events are a great opportunity for you to meet Placement Peer Mentors from your department and find out more about their experiences applying for and being on placement. You can also find a potential mentor at these events. They will take place during semester 1 of the academic year.

Become a Peer Mentor

Placement Peer Mentors support students going through the placement process. Working with a small group of mentees preparing for placement. Mentors also attend a Q&A event for their department, where they can share their placement experiences with students. You could support students with finding and applying for placements, preparing to go on placement and and accessing support with their placement.

 

Mentors do not support with the writing of applications or replicate any of the support that already exists. They act as informal peer to peer support and are trained to signpost students where necessary.

Recruitment and Training

Any student who has started or completed a one year placement as part of their course can sign up to become a mentor. Students who sign up will need to attend an online training session to prepare for the role. To become a peer mentor, you just need to sign up to and attend one of the workshops listed below. Contact peersupport@bath.ac.uk if you are unable to attend a session but still want to become a peer mentor.

Become a Lead Peer Mentor

Once you have completed the training to become a Placement Peer Mentor, you can apply to become a Lead Peer Mentor and further support with the scheme. As a Lead Peer Mentor, you will facilitate Q&A events to help mentors share their placement experiences, as well as supporting mentors and mentees during the year. Being a Lead Peer Mentor is a small additional time commitment but can help you develop valuable facilitation and leadership skills that will help you in the future.
