FAQs

How do I join?

Having found this page, just click the link on the left to buy your membership and you'll have access to all our coached sessions and facilities. We recommend joining our Facebook group to stay up-to-date with training sessions and events.

What if I only do two of the three sports?

This is very common, quite a few of our members don't participate in triathlons and instead join the club with the view of working on two of the three sports, or simply just keeping fit.

I don’t have a bike. Can I still join?

Yes! You can still attend all of our swimming, running and spinning sessions without your own bike, you’ll only need one for the Wednesday and Sunday group rides. Unfortunately however, we don’t have any bikes to lend so if you want to race you will need your own. We have many people who would be happy to advise you on buying a bike, so do ask a member of the committee or coaching team.

Do I have to attend every session?

No, you can attend as many or as few sessions as you wish, they are open to everybody, however we do divide the swimming and group rides by ability (details on the timetable.)

Do I have to be a member to train with you?

For the first 2-3 weeks of term, no. After that, yes. You're welcome to come along to any of our sessions to try them out before you join, but after a couple of weeks into the term it is necessary to purchase the club membership.

I’m new to the sport/not very fast - does that matter?

Absolutely not. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming club catering for all levels of triathlete whether you are just beginning your triathlon journey, converting from another sport or a seasoned pro, we’d love to see you getting involved.

I can’t swim. Can you teach me?

You do have to pass an SU swim test to join our swimming sessions (sorry, this isn’t our rule!) However it’s a simple test involving swimming 100m and treading water which you can retake if you fail the first time. If you struggle with the test, our swimming coaches would be happy to give you some pointers and you can go away and practice to try another day.

If I join, do I have to compete?

No. We do have three BUCS competitions during the year which are beginner friendly, but you are by no means obligated to compete unless you'd like to.

What kit do I need for training sessions?

Swimming - trunks/costume, goggles, towel and a water bottle are really all the basics you need. Most people, especially those with long hair, wear swimming hats, but they're not compulsory. Some people also bring their own equipment, but again this isn't necessary as the club has plenty of floats for everyone to borrow.

Cycling - Shorts (preferably padded), a jersey, shoes and a drinks bottle are the essentials for a spin session. If you're going on a ride, add your bike and helmet to that list and make sure to dress for the weather. Take a look at our Cycling page for a more comprehensive list of equipment to take on a ride.

Running - shoes, top, shorts and a drink; simple!

Will there be other people my standard?

Almost certainly. Each year we welcome many beginners and newcomers to the sport, of varying ability. On the other end of the spectrum, we have several athletes who compete regularly in age group races, and a growing number of elite athletes and everything in between, so we're sure you'll find somebody to train with.

I've never cycled in a group before and I'm a bit nervous...

Trust us, you're not the only one. When you arrive for a ride, join the beginner group and let the ride leader know you're new, they'll be happy to give you pointers and help you get comfortable. If you don't fancy going out on the road straight away, we will be running skills sessions throughout the year on the closed road circuit at Odd Down, led by a qualified British Cycling coach to help you gain confidence. Have a look at our Cycling page for more tips if you're new to riding.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to get in touch, we'd love to talk to you!
