Union Support

Whilst you are on placement, you are a registered student and, as such, are entitled to make use of the full range of support services offered by the Students’ Union and are entitled to use the Union facilities whilst on placement once you have re-registered (through Register On-Line). You also may be able to use the union facilities at other Universities, on production of your union membership, including being able to look at their accommodation lists.

The Students’ Union Advice and Representation Centre can help support you in areas including: coping with student life, advice on academic and health and welfare issues, including issues on placement, as well as advice on healthy eating, personal safety, alcohol, drugs and sexual health. You are also able to contact Nightline our free non-judgemental confidential listening service during term time between 8pm and 8am everyday. The phone number is 01225 38 3030 and is just on the back of your library card.

During your time on placement your Union will keep in touch with you through a series of newsletters from your SU President. However, you can also keep up-to-date with everything that is happening at Bath by logging in to BathStudent.com. By selecting your interests on your BathStudent.com profile , you can opt in to receive lots of information and details of opportunities that you may be interested in directly to your e-mail account or mobile phone.

You maintain the right to stand and to vote in the Students’ Union elections whilst on placement, including any by-elections, referendums or the SU Officer elections that take place in March. Undergraduate Faculty Rep Elections also take place in March that you are able to take part in. All details of elections can be found on our or you can email suofficers@bath.ac.uk if what you want to know isn’t there.

Student Status

You may need a letter saying you are a registered full time student. Typically, this will be for exemption from Council Tax, but could also be for access to other libraries, accessing student discount etc.

The procedure to obtain this letter is as follows:

  • Make sure your online registration details are up-to-date
  • Enter ROL (registration online) www.bath.ac.uk/registrationon-line/, enter your username and password, click ‘Proceed’. Now from the left hand menu choose ‘To Whom Letter’ request
  • A letter will be sent to you.

If you have completed your Student Loan Company (SLC) online form correctly when applying for your loan then you will NOT need a letter for the SLC. You will only need a letter for the SLC if you are applying for your loan to come early (before Oct). Contact your placement office if you have any queries.

The Student Services Centre provides advice on a range of issues including: Funding, Health and well-being, Immigration and visa, Disability and also provides referrals to other services. Careers Service

You can continue to access the Careers Service whilst on Placement, in person, by telephone or by email. Appointments can be arranged via Skype or telephone, and the Careers Service is open throughout the vacations too. You can access all of the University of Bath Library’s online resources from off-campus with your Computing Services login. Individual journals and books, as well as databases can be accessed via the Library’s home page at www.bath. ac.uk/library/ The Library staff are available to support you while you are on placement. If you use Google Scholar, always access it via the Databases link on the Library’s home page and not in any other way, to ensure that you can view articles in Library e-journals via a Google Scholar: www.bath.ac.uk/library/

The Bath Copies service will send scanned extracts of books and journals that are not in the Library’s online collection i.e. are only available in the Library. There is a standard £3.50 fee for each request. For more information go to www.bath.ac.uk/library/services/bath-copies

Computer services

You may be able to use the wireless Internet at your workplace, if the organization participates in the eduroam service. To find out more about eduroam and the participating organizations in the UK and abroad, go to www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/networking/wireless/index.html

The Placements Team will use your University email address to communicate important information relating to deadlines for forms and reports. Other University departments will use it to e-mail you regarding important matters such as registration, unit-enrolment, and assessment. It is important, therefore, to ensure that you monitor your University e-mail account and that it can receive incoming mail (you do not have a full inbox). It is possible to auto-forward e-mails from your other e-mail accounts to your Bath address www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/email/tools/.
