Kit Tender Announced

Over the last few weeks, we have been conducting a tender for a new kit supplier. This article will outline the process and outcome of the tender. This is so we can be super transparent with all our students and can understand exactly how this impacts you.

We have decided to award the kit supplier contract to:

SDL Group – Surridge!

If you are interested in the process, please see below.

Background:

We are currently in a partnership with DreamSport (also known as Under Armour), which would be up for renewal on the 19/7/22. After three years we could have extended by one or two years or could terminate the contract. Due to notification of potential administration, and concerns with service over the last year the SU (Students Union) and University felt it too risky to remain with DreamSport, and over the last week this has been confirmed.

Methodology:

The Sports Department and SU were involved in all aspects of the tender, from writing the document to student groups reviewing kit samples. We have been able to see an overarching picture of what the various companies will be able to offer us long term and for the quick turnaround needed for the next academic year. The tender process needed to be much shorter and follow much more urgency than previous years of going to tender.

Companies were invited to tender and assessed on certain criteria:

Evaluation Criteria

Weighting (%)

Quality of Product

30

Service Delivery

30

Sustainability

10

Commercial Offer

30

All tender documents received where scrutinised and ranked based on the information provided. Any legal, financial and technical issues were identified and noted accordingly. The top three suppliers were then invited to present and bring garments to be reviewed for quality, functionality, aesthetic and comfort. Staff and students were invited to review the garments. Those who we knew had issues with kit in the past and who the companies provided a sample to review were asked to come along. There was very limited time to do this (less than 24 hours) so within the parameters of time invited as many student clubs as possible to review.

The outcome from student scoring was added to the previous scoring and any scores re-considered based on the presentation. A fuller debate was had around whether the proposed winners met all of our requirements for staff and students. Testimonials from other Universities and Sports Officers from other institutions were consulted.

We have now come to the end of our 10-day standstill period and the official award has been made and the partnership can commence.

Outcome:

Seven companies responded with tender submissions, significantly less than previous years. Many kit suppliers are facing lots of challenges at the moment and companies with significantly low credit scores were omitted.

Headline statements underpinning the award:

  • Cheapest unit garment price, without perceived diminishment of quality

  • Cost of living, prices are going up and we want to relieve the price of kit as much as possible

  • Strong testimonials from other universities

  • Large desire to partner with Surridge from the student body.

  • Can issue kit in branded colours, which some others were unable to do.

  • Production timelines, will get kit ready for matches in September.

So... What's next?

We will be contacting several clubs to meet with Surridge on the 18th and 19th May to discuss options for kit. We encourage if you are asked to do this, you bring items you like from other suppliers to demonstrate fabrics and fit of garments. Look out for these in your inbox’s!

We will be holding a vote on the SU Sport Instagram (@subathsport), with kit designs for you to vote on! Keep your eyes peeled for these coming very soon!
