Student Community Action (SCA)

If you are looking to get the most out of your time at the University of Bath then joining SCA is a must!

SCA stands for Student Community Action and we are the team that co-ordinates volunteer work and community projects as part of the University's Volunteer Centre.

We run a variety of projects through-out the year:

The Children's Christmas Party

This is SCA's first event of the year so don't miss out. Every year we entertain a group of disabled children from Junior Gateway (a youth group in Bath)with games, music, crafts and our very own Santa's grotto! In the past we have had performances from the cheerleaders, workshops with Gravity Vomit and lots of arts and crafts activities.

The Bathwick Hill Fun Run

The Fun Run is one of our biggest fundraisers. One Sunday every year students, staff and fellow Bathonians take the challenge all in the name of charity. It is a sponsored event and all the money raised goes towards funding The Romanian Aid Project.
SCA volunteers organise this event - everything from getting sponsorship, designing posters and stewarding on the day needs doing. This is a fantastic event which raises the profile of SCA as well as helping to fund a great cause

The Romania Aid Trip

Every Summer a group of SCA volunteers travel out to a small town called Comenesti in North East Romania to work in 2 orphanges; Casa Lumina - an orphanage for disabled children funded by the charity "Cry in the Dark", and a state run orphanage. The trip enables the volunteers to be submerged in the Romanian culture, pick up some of the language, eat the food, meet the locals, see the country and most importantly give the orphans the love and attention they are most lacking.
Activities on past trips have included mask making, rounders, skipping, making friendship bracelets and drawing. The trip is incredibly eye-opening and rewarding.
By becoming part of SCA you could be one of the volunteers travelling to Romania in the summer of 2007, but if you would prefer to stay closer to home we also need volunteers to help collect resources for the group to take out and run fundraising events. Get involved with this project!! It's worth it.

Bulgaria Aid Trip

This is a new project for SCA and will be running for the first time in Summer 2008.  A group of 8 volunteers will be heading out to Bulgaria to work with vulnerable children during their summer holidays.  Work will include arts and crafts, sports and generally entertaining the children.  The project is run through a charity,OXAB. For more information on the charity please see:

BUSTED (Bath University Schools Together Events Day)

This day sees lots of clubs and societies come together with the help of SCA volunteers and run a day of activities for pupils of the local schools. It's great fun and the kids love it. You can help with whatever activities you want, in the past we have had trampolining, basketball, circus skills, street dance and climbing - to name but a few, and you don't have to be an expert either...all you need is enthusiasm and patience with the children. In the past we have entertained up to 30 kids and we've had great feedback from them all.

Operation Christmas Child

During October and the beginning of November we make and collect shoe boxes wrapped in christmas paper and filled with toys and gifts which we then send to children all over the world.  Without Operation Christmas Child these children would not receive any presents.  This is an easy project to get involved with - simply fill a shoe box! For more information please see:

HOW TO PACK A SHOE BOX

  Pro-experience

This trip takes place during the Easter Holidays.  A diverse group of volunteers from all areas within the university pack their bags and head to Wales for the week.  The volunteers work with the National Trust and take part in various conservation projects. This is a residential volunteering opportunity.

BTCV

If you have a passion for the environment or just fancy a change of activity at the weekend then the BTCV Conservation Project is for you. BTCV works with the local community, including Bath University with the aim of making a difference to the local environment. Previous projects have included Grassland Rehabilitation work and an invasive species clearance. Its good fun and projects are regular. They normally take place on Saturdays and although you need to bring waterproofs, a packlunch and strong walking shoes, tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

The
YHA Project

We are currently working with the YHA (Youth Hostel Association) on Bathwick Hill, in developing their grounds. Each Sunday a group of volunteers take part in general conservation work and environmental redevelopment at the hostel. Refreshments are provided by the YHA.

Oxfam

SCA works with Oxfam to organise events such as "Stand Up and Speak Out" - a global movement supporting the battle against poverty.  Other work includes "Make Trade Fair" events and generally supporting Oxfams campaigns.

This is a new project with SCA and has come about after one of our volunteers graduated from the Oxfam CHANGE course in 2007.

We are always looking for new members. You can get involved in so many different ways, either as a project leader, a project member or maybe even a committee member. For more information on these roles please e-mail us!
