The SU awarded 'Very Good' at the NUS Green Impact Awards

The SU is thrilled to have received a ‘Very Good’ rating for the NUS Green Impact Award 22-23.

Green Impact is a United Nations award winning programme that is specifically designed to support sustainable practice within organisations. The award will measure the SU’s sustainable initiatives across the year and award them with a rating.

Even though the SU has received consistently high rankings, officers, staff and student groups have continued to work hard on a variety of campaigns and activities. Some of the highlights across the year include:

  • Selling thousands of kitchenware items at the Sustainability Fair during Freshers 2022. The Sustainability Fair was a wonderful opportunity to highlight sustainability initiatives and remind students of their importance.
  • Started working towards the Hedgehog Friendly Campus accreditation and received 420 tree saplings to be planted on campus.
  • Invested in reusable plastic cups for Summer Ball, which can now be used at future SU Events.
  • Continued to work with Campus Services and the Climate Action team on the Sustainable Food Commitment.
  • Ran a Green Week which was supported by student groups and Exec members and included events such as a BUMUN Untied Nations Environmental Programme Debate, a Chocolate Brownie Blind Tasting Challenge and a Tree Planting session with V Nature.
  • Installed a Grease Monkeys Bike Maintenance station outside Chancellors Building for our campus community cyclists.
  • Student groups ran events supporting sustainable initiatives such as V Nature tree planting and Turkish Society Earthquake Appeal.
Although we are very proud of our ‘Very Good’ rating, we understand it is not all about the rating! We as an organisation are committed to sustainability and ensuring we reduce the effects we have on the planet. We are privileged to have such passionate student leaders who are dedicated to achieving the same goals.

If you have any ideas of how we can be more sustainable then please reach out to Activities Officer David.

The SU will continue to work hard this year to maintain our high rating and do what we can to save the planet!
