BUMUN Society Celebrate Huge Achievement!

The BUMUN Society have been celebrating some huge achievements after attending the prestigious London International Model United Nations (LIMUN) Conference in London.

The LIMUN is the largest conference in Europe and hosts 1300 students who travel from all over the world to attend. They also host influential guest speakers such as diplomats, high commissioners and Lords.

The conference spans over three days and attendees debate each day on a range of subjects such as NATO, energy security and the climate emergency. Liason Officer Ahmad Mahmoud commented that there is such a range of topics that you can, ‘find your own interests’. He also added that the conference stood out to them as young people in particular as it is, ‘made by students, for students’ and believe this is why events such as LIMUN and the society BUMUN are so important. The General Secretary of the conference, Olivia Sun Jia Ying said, ‘the setting is a stimulation, but the topics we are debating are real’.Ahmad also said that, ‘this is the core of BUMUN. Young people don’t usually have a platform to actively get involved and it is frustrating to see that you don’t have any representation in real issues. This gives them a platform to discuss topics that affect millions’.

The BUMUN Society attended last year as a delegation of 7 but this year bought 20 members, as well as 3 people as Director and Deputy Director and Staff. The Chair of the Society, Nadine, was pleased with this turn out and believes this represents the growing popularity of the society- they now have over 30 members who attend weekly.

The society was thrilled to receive not only 5 individual awards- three for ‘most improved delegate’ and two for ‘honourable mentions’ - but also the very prestigious award of best small delegation. This is a huge accomplishment for Bath and the BUMUN Society as they were up against around 50 other societies from all around the world.

To celebrate their successes, the BUMUN Society is holding their own conference on March 19. Their conference is collaborating with the LIMUN for one committee, where the policy document written by members will be sent to the LIMUN and if successful, will be implemented. The conference is completely free to attend and is open to everyone- there will be different scales of debate, meaning it will be accessible to join as a first-time or experienced debater. Excitingly, there will also be a surprise guest speaker from an expert in environmental policy and decision making which the society is looking forward to.
