Our Sport Officer Will Galloway describes the thrilling day of sport at Varsity 2017
We are proud to say that The University of Bath remain undefeated in our Varsity series with Cardiff Met University after a thrilling second year of the event. Over 500 students made the trip to play and watch, as both universities competed across in 9 matches, across 5 different sports, with 5 points for a win, 3 for a draw, 1 losing bonus point when the losing team score more than half the winning team.
Bath made a faltering start to the day losing their first three encounters, but securing vital losing bonus points in two of the three fixtures. We rallied in the later games with some outstanding performances in Hockey, Football and Netball meaning that the score was 21-25 in favour of Cardiff going into the final match, Men’s Rugby.
After a low scoring first half Bath went into the break 7-0 down but a phenomenal second half display saw them take victory in the Rugby 22-14, this left the overall series deadlocked at 26-26 meaning an extra period of ‘Golden Point’ was played to decide the winner. After some scary moments on the edge of our try line, Bath got some territory and from a lineout on the half way line broke away to score the winning try. A fantastic end to a great day of sport and we are delighted to be able to bring the trophy back to Bath for another year.
A big thanks must go to our fantastic Cheerleading team who supported from the first to the last match with some impressive routines, our student spectators, SU Staff and Sponsors, Berkeley’s Coaches and PA Consulting who all made the day possible. Along with everyone who supported the Rainbow Laces campaign on social media to encourage LGBT+ participation in sport, great to see so many of you getting in the spirit, we never knew there were so many ways to incorporate a pair of laces into your outfit!
