Who am I?

Hi, I’m Tom, and I’ve just finished my degree in Electronic Engineering. I first got involved in the Students’ Union through the sports clubs, particularly kite and windsurf, wakeboarding and snowsports. Kitesurfing is my main sporting interest, although I’ve been on the Christmas snowsports trip every year I’ve been here, it is a definite annual highlight!

What do I do?

As VP Communications I have five main areas of work that are specific to me, as well as helping to develop the strategy of the SU overall, with the other sabbs. The areas are democracy, commercial services, finance, website and communications.

Democracy is very important in the SU and I make sure that all of our democratic procedures work properly, as well as helping the elections committee to publicise and run all the elections throughout the year.

Commercial services in the SU include the bars, shop, Fresh and The Terrace. All of these provide you with a service, as well as producing revenue that is put straight back into all of the activities and other services that we provide for our members. My job involves making strategic decisions and reviewing their performances. I also chair Finance and Commercial Services Committee which is responsible for ensuring that the SU is running well financially and that we are spending our money in the correct areas.

The website is my responsibility and as a key method of communication is a very important part of my job. I also try to develop new ways to communicate both with our members and with external bodies.

My main objectives for the year

  • To make Bathstudent.com more useful for students, especially clubs and societies.
  • To finish the work on the alternative prospectus, so that SU can present its view to potential new students.
  • Ensure that the online elections for Academic Reps run smoothly
  • Help the media groups develop further and reach more students
  • To work with the other sabbs in the campaign for more social space on campus, and a better bus service.
