Student Led Groups

Students are involved in many different activities. Some of them fundraise in Bath for local and national charities, while others organise both one-off and regular events for a range of groups, such as the elderly or children. The Volunteer Centre also has opportunities to get involved with conservation projects and information on volunteering overseas.

Rag: University Rag societies are student-run charitable fundraising organisations that are widespread in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Most universities in the UK and Ireland, as well as some in South Africa and The Netherlands have a Rag. In some universities Rags are known as Charities Campaigns, Charity Appeals, Charity Kommittees, or Karnivals, but they all share many of the same attributes, and together raise over a million pounds for charity each year. Bath Rag organises a Fireworks display, a Fashion Show and a sponsored hitchhike to Paris – amongst many other events.

Student Community Action: SCA organise small-scale community projects within Bath and further afield in Romania and Bulgaria. Please visit the SCA homepage to find out more about each individual project.

School Tutoring: If you would like to gain an insight into what it is like to be a teacher or you enjoy working with kids then our school tutoring project for you! You can volunteer as a general classroom assistant for one morning/afternoon per week in a local primary school.

School Mentoring: Our school mentoring project is aimed at supporting pupils who may be having difficulties with their studies, by helping them to break down barriers and realise their goals. You will work one-to-one with a pupil from a local boy’s secondary school, normally in the range of 13-15 years of age. You will be helping with many things, from being a listening ear to helping them with their homework. You will also be a positive role model to these young lads.

Pro - Experience: Pro-Experience organise a trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales to carry out valued conservation work for the National Trust, which is a UK charity whose aim is to protect the natural environment. Bath students spend 7 days and 6 nights with 11 other (all strangers!) reducing the effect of erosion on the vegetation around the footpaths in the Brecon Beacons and maintaining the natural beauty of the area. This volunteer group is dedicated to encouraging social and cultural awareness and promoting cross-cultural interaction in the spirit of serving the community.

A DofE programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24.
