The Volunteer Centre runs 2 main projects that involve volunteering within schools. These are School Tutoring and also a Volunteer Mentor Project.
School Tutoring
If you would like to gain an insight into what it is like to be a teacher or you enjoy working with kids then this is the project for you! You can volunteer as a general classroom assistant for one morning/afternoon per week in a local primary school.
Students who complete 8 - 10 weeks on the scheme will receive a certificate.
Due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of spaces we are able to provide, all volunteers will be asked to complete a few short questions explaining why you would like to be involved with the scheme etc. and decisions about places will be made on the basis of these questions.
We are also looking for someone to fill the role of School Tutor Coordinator this year helping to ensure the smooth running of the tutoring scheme, organising tutor meetings and socials, and to feedback to the Volunteer Centre on how the scheme is going.
If you are interested in volunteering on the scheme or would like further information, please email Karen at K.L.Thompson@bath.ac.uk.
Please note that due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of places schools are able to offer us we will email all interested parties some interview questions to complete and return to us by the 7th October to help us to determine who to offer places to.
What training is given?
Training is given to students on the School Tutor Scheme as part of SORTED, the Students’ Union training scheme. Please note that there are 2 training sessions you will need to attend to become a volunteer for this scheme. The first session is on October 15th from 2.15pm to 3.45pm, this will explain all about the scheme. The other session is on child protection and there are 2 dates you can choose from - either Oct 27th from 2.15pm- 3.45pm or Oct 29th from 5.15pm-6.45pm.
All volunteers will have to be police checked due to volunteering with children. These checks are carried out by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau).
Once you become a volunteer you will find our ‘Volunteer Policy’ a very useful guide. This handbook will tell you all you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a volunteer.
