Mentoring Scheme
Student Mentors help to support pupils who may be having difficulties with their studies, by helping them to break down barriers and realise their goals.
You will work one-to-one with a pupil from a local boy’s secondary school, normally in the range of 13-15 years of age. You will be helping with many things, from being a listening ear to helping them with their homework. You will also be a positive role model to these young lads.
You will need to be able to commit a couple of hours a week for about 4 months.
Due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of spaces we are able to provide, all volunteers will be asked to complete a few short questions explaining why you would like to be involved with the scheme etc. and decisions about places will be made on the basis of these questions.
We are also looking for someone to fill the role of Student Mentor Coordinator this year helping to ensure the smooth running of the mentoring scheme project, organising mentor meetings and socials, and to feedback to the Volunteer Centre on how the scheme is going.

Please note that due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of places we are able to offer all interested parties will be emailed some interview questions to complete and return by the 9th October to help us to determine places on the scheme.
What training is given?
Training is given to students on the Mentor Scheme as part of SORTED, the Students’ Union training scheme. Please note that there are 3 training sessions you will need to attend to become a volunteer for this scheme. These sessions are on Oct 16th from 5.15pm-6.45pm and on Oct 22nd from 5.15pm-6.15pm - these will explain all about the scheme and your role as a mentor. The final session you will need to attend is on child protection, you can choose to go to either a session on the 27th Oct from 2.15pm-3.45pm or on the 29th Oct from 5.15pm-6.45pm.
Alternatively, please drop into the Volunteer Centre to pick up a SORTED leaflet, which includes a timetable of all SORTED's training sessions.
For this particular role you will have to be police checked due to volunteering with children. These checks are carried out by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau).
