Mentoring Scheme
Student Mentors help to support pupils who may be having difficulties with their studies, by helping them to break down barriers and realise their goals. You can volunteer at one of two schools; either Culverhay Boys School or Ralph Allen School.
Culverhay Boys School:
You will work one-to-one with a pupil from a local boy’s secondary school, normally in the range of 13-15 years of age. You will be helping with many things, from being a listening ear to helping them with their homework. You will also be a positive role model to your mentee.
You will need to be able to commit a couple of hours a week for about 4 months. We are also looking for someone to fill the role of Mentoring Scheme Coordinator in addition to being a Mentor. The Mentoring Scheme Coordinators role is to ensure the smooth running of the mentoring scheme project, organising mentor meetings and socials, and feeding back to the Volunteer Centre on how the scheme is going. Please refer to the below role descriptions for further information about the roles.

Ralph Allen School:
The Mentoring Scheme with Ralph Allen School functions in the same way as the Culverhay Scheme, with the only difference being that the mentees at Ralph Allen are a little older (around 16 years) so you are likely to mentoring a student who is about to take their CGSE's/ first year AS exams.
As with the Culverhay Mentoring Scheme, we are also seeking to recruit a volunteer to fill the role of Mentoring Scheme Coordinator for Ralph Allen. Please refer to the below role descriptions for further information.

Due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of spaces we are able to provide at both schools, all volunteers will be asked to complete a few short questions explaining why you would like to be involved with the scheme etc. and decisions about places will be made on the basis of these questions.
Please note that there is one intake to this scheme per academic year (at the beginning of the first term) and all applicants need to be aged 18 years and over.
What training is given?
Training is given to students on the Mentor Scheme as part of SORTED, the Students’ Union training scheme. Please note that there are 2 training sessions you will need to attend to become a volunteer for this scheme; one session explaining all about the scheme and preparing you for your role as a mentor, and one child protection session.
For this particular role you will have to be police checked due to volunteering with children. These checks are carried out by the Volunteer Centre and then sent to the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) for processing.
Once you become a volunteer you will find our Volunteer Policy a very useful guide. This handbook will tell you all you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a volunteer.
