Mentoring Scheme
Student Mentors help to support pupils who may be having difficulties with their studies, by helping them to break down barriers and realise their goals.
You will work one-to-one with a pupil from a local boy’s secondary school, normally in the range of 13-15 years of age. You will be helping with many things, from being a listening ear to helping them with their homework. You will also be a positive role model to these young lads.
You will need to be able to commit a couple of hours a week for about 4 months.
Due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of spaces we are able to provide, all volunteers will be asked to complete a few short questions explaining why you would like to be involved with the scheme etc. and decisions about places will be made on the basis of these questions.
We are also looking for someone to fill the role of Student Mentor Coordinator this year helping to ensure the smooth running of the mentoring scheme project, organising mentor meetings and socials, and to feedback to the Volunteer Centre on how the scheme is going.
Please note that there is one intake to this scheme per academic year (at the beginning of the first term) and all applicants need to be aged 18 years and over. If you are interested in volunteering on the scheme or would like further information, please email Karen at K.L.Thompson@bath.ac.uk.
Please note that due to the popularity of the scheme and the limited number of places we are able to offer all interested parties will be emailed some interview questions to complete and return by the 9th October to help us to determine places on the scheme.
What training is given?
Training is given to students on the Mentor Scheme as part of SORTED, the Students’ Union training scheme. Please note that there are 3 training sessions you will need to attend to become a volunteer for this scheme; two sessions explaining all about the scheme and preparing you for your role as a mentor, and one child protection session
For this particular role you will have to be police checked due to volunteering with children. These checks are carried out by the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau).
Once you become a volunteer you will find our Volunteer Policy a very useful guide. This handbook will tell you all you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a volunteer.
