You Said...We Did
Find out what The Volunteer Centre has done in response to your feedback:
You Said:
Duke of Edinburgh volunteer group said they legally need to put someone through a Mountain Leadership course for when they go on expedition at a cost of £295. Otherwise they would not be able to go on their expeditions.
We Did:
The SU put £450 towards the costs of this to put 2 people through the course
You Said:
The Mentors and Tutors both said they would like more contact with the other mentors and tutors on the scheme
We Did:
Recruited Mentoring and Tutoring Scheme Coordinators who have arranged socials and also set up Facebook group to develop communication.
You said:
It would be useful to organise a group activity where all the mentors and mentees work together
We Did:
The Volunteer Centre has organised a group activity for sometime in April 2008 for both mentees and mentors. This will be held on campus and will be a great teambuilding event
You said:
The only other thing that I can think of would be having more than one school in Bath that offers the opportunity to mentor?
We did:
The Volunteer Centre will be researching wether they can set the scheme up at Hayesfield Girls School for 2008/9
You said:
I think it might be worth while next year making it clear to the Romanian project volunteers that the commitment to raise money throughout the year is as important as the actual summer trip to Romania. On general just providing more information about what is actually needed with regard to time would be useful at the beginning of the year?
We did:
The Volunteer Centre now have included a question within the Romania interviews about whether the applicant has got any fundraising experience and stressing how important it is to get involved with fundraising for this project to be successful. The Volunteer Centre also stressed the time commitment at these interviews.
You said:
More choice of Student-led projects.
We did:
The Volunteer Centre has set up a new area called Junction 49 to create new student-led projects with the aim of making these projects more sustainable for future years to come.
You said:
Scrap the awards at and use the event to say a thank you to all volunteers - don't pick out a choice few as all volunteers do good work.
We did:
The Volunteer Exec now organise the party along the lines of what they think volunteers would like. This includes getting rid of awards for volunteers at the party.
You said:
I think it is extremely important that Volunteering Exec is started up properly next year to bring cohesiveness to the different volunteering areas, as well as to drive the area forward and make it more student led as an overall area. The current format of Volunteering Exec in the Constitution needs reviewing as it is outdated.
I also think that there should be a Volunteering Officer, in the same way that there are Socs/Arts/Media officers. I also think that some sort of Union accreditation scheme should be introduced to recognise that people have volunteered?
We did:
The Volunteer Exec. now meets every 6 weeks and has representatives from most volunteer groups operating via the Volunteer Centre.
A working group has now been formed consisting of the SU General Manager, the VP for Education, the University's Pro Vice Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Head of the Careers Service to look at setting up an accreditation scheme. The scheme will aim to get student?s volunteering work onto their transcripts when graduating.
