If you are involved in a student group which travels a lot then you may be able to help them out. The Union has a fleet of vehicles (minibuses, MPVs and cars) available for use by student groups.
As a student, you can be trained under MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) to drive these vehicles under Union insurance, as long as the purpose is a Union activity, e.g. taking the squash team to an away fixture or driving a group of volunteers to a project. Despite its name, it's for cars and MPVs ("people carriers") as well.
From 2008, the Transport Office will be offering "MEEP," or Minibus Emergency Evacuation Procedure training which, also despite its name, is available for car & MPV drivers. This is an awareness-raising course to help drivers understand how difficult it is to get out of a burning vehicle. It involves a minibus and a smoke machine, plus some previously unasked questions. Here's an example: "Open your car BACK SEAT door, shut your eyes and keep them shut. Now get into the back seat of your car and close the door. With your eyes still tightly shut, can you find the door handle to get out again?" That exercise is even more fun if you have a two-door car.
To drive a car or MPV under MiDAS, you need to be over 18, and to drive a minibus, over 21. The training is a nationally recognised qualification which also, subject to certain licensing conditions being met, allows you to drive as a volunteer for numerous organisations, such as The Scout Association and Girlguiding UK.
