About the Club:-
At the beginners' level, the BUBC Freshers' Squad have finished in the top 6 of over 60 competing universities in the two years since the inception of the Freshers' Challenge, a competition which is open to all university rowing clubs throughout Britain, underlining our commitment to introducing people to a new sport.
At the elite end of the squad, athletes have represented Great Britain at the Under-23 World Championships, with others representing England at the Home Countries International and Eusa (European Universities Regatta). Alumni of the club have represented GB at the Senior World Championships and more talent is coming through the club every year.
The Boat Club also has regular socials throughout the year, including the reknowned Initiation, Christmas Dinner, and Summer Boat Party.
World Class Start & Potential
Bath University Boat Club started working in partnership with the World Class Start and Potential Rowing Programme in October 2003. The programme is funded by UkSport with Lottery Money and is run by the British International Rowing Office of the Amateur Rowing Association. Siemens have sponsored the programme since 2006.
The scheme is not a participation scheme - the individuals involved are all aiming for one thing - an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 or 2012 and beyond. Athletes are tested at the University every academic year at the start of the first semester. The athletes are selected on a number of criteria including height, arm span, power and fitness. They are then coached as a small group of selected athletes who will take part in monthly camps held at the National Water Sports Centre and who will end up skilled and strong enough to trial for Great Britain Rowing Teams at Under 23, Senior and Olympic Level if they do the required training.
More information can be found on the Amateur Rowing Association and Team Bath websites.
So far the programme in Bath has produced athletes for the Great Britain Senior, Under 23 and World University Championship Teams and has assisted other members of BUBC achieve medals at National regattas and even selection onto the England Team. In 2007, Heather Stanning represented Great Britain at the U23 World Rowing Championships where she won the women's coxless pairs. Becoming World Champion after just 3 years in the sport is a massive achievement and is a testament to the hard work and determination put in by her and the World Class Start coaches.
