Guidelines for posters
The idea of the event is to showcase the research at the University of Bath so that it can be understood by a wide audience. When producing your poster, you should consider your audience, which will consist of:
- other postgraduate students from other departments
- members of the public, including 6th formers
- public engagement experts.
Your poster should allow everyone in the audience to understand what you are talking about! So...
- Keep technical jargon, equations, abbreviations to an absolute minimum
- explain the aims of your work so that the benefits to society are clear
- even if your current work is not directly applicable, think of the long term potential and what your work could be used for
- increase the appeal of your presentation to include how other research in other departments has either made your work possible or could be used to develop it in the future
- do not think you have to fit in all your research: a taster will do!
- What about a flow diagram or a spidergram?
This will not be like a normal poster in your field - that is why we are paing to have a new one printed for you (once we've checked it fits the aims of the event).
Communicating research
Communicating research is important to:
- publicise major work
- engage with the public and media
- attract funding from research councils (they are not experts in you field either!)
- enable links to be formed between different disciplines and collaborative projects to develop
You will be given
- feedback on how well you communicated with the audience, from public engagement experts; Dr John Copley (senior teaching fellow at the School of Ocean & Earth Science at the University of Southampton, and a former writer and assistant news editor for New Scientist)
- the chance to win a prize!
