American Football

Chairman - Chris Jones - cj250@bath.ac.uk

The American Football club was voted Club of the Year 2007 at The University of Bath Blues Awards and has recently enjoyed some of its most successful seasons, reaching the southern conference semi finals in 2008 and winning the inaugural BUAFL Challenge Trophy in 2009.

While many people will never have thought about playing American Football, it is a great opportunity to learn a new and upcoming sport. The University has a dedicated team of coaches and experienced players who are well equipped to teach new players every aspect of the game. It doesn't matter if you don't know anything about the game. Most people who play American Football in the UK start at University, this is one reason why a lot of first time players still make it into the team. It is also very common for rugby players to make the move across to the sport, a lot of who maintain the change and concentrate on American Football. The game is fun, everyone is accepted, everyone gets on with everyone, and the socials are memorable.

The Killer Bees will be competing in the southern division of Conference 3 of the British Universities American Football League (BUAFL). The eight regular season games are shown below

After these eight regular season games the top teams in the country are entered into a play-off system; the winners of this are crowned the national champions.

The Killer Bees will be training three times a week this year. The Wednesday and Sunday technical sessions, in addition to the Tuesday fitness session will continue.

The Wednesday session takes place on the flood lit grass behind the astro turf and is held between 7.30pm and 10pm. The Sunday session is held on the astro turf in the STV and takes place between 2.30pm and 5pm. The Tuesday session takes place in the indoor track facility at the STV between 9pm and 10pm. Often before this fitness session a classroom session will be had where film of ourselves/opponents can be viewed and analysis performed.

Continuing the trend started last year, the club will be playing all its home games on campus, on the pitches just off the main drive into the University.

Last season the club put on one of the biggest sporting events held on the University campus in recent years. Over 250 spectators were able to enjoy hot refreshments, scoreboard, free programme and live commentary at our final home game of the season against the Bristol Barracuda. Branded as "The Sting", the event was a massive success and this year the clubs showpiece events will be extended further to encompass two of our home games. "The Buzz" will take place on Sunday 15th November 2009 and is set to be an event not to be missed!

The Bath Jets, our university cheerleading squad, support the team at all of our home games and most of the away games too.

The team is this year being sponsored by The Curfew. As well as providing the after match refreshments The Curfew also shows two live NFL Games every Sunday and a late license ensures that the climax of the second game will not be missed. Most members of the team will head down to town after practice to relax and socialise.
