22/06/2009 - Here are a few exercises that Jon recommends that you do over the summer to improve your overall game.
1) Dribble on the spot. Increase the pace progressively. This is a very good exercise. Vary between long and short movements.
2) To 1) while moving forwards, backwards and sideways.
3) Lift the ball into the air, and control it on the way down so you have full control after 1 bounce. Throw the ball higher and higher as you get better.
4) Do 180 and 360 degree turns on both forehand and backhand. Increase pace progressively. Continue until you can do them smoothly and without losing the ball.
5) Put up a target about 1 foot long on the floor as far away as you can. Move and hit a low pass into the target. Try to hit the pass as hard as you can and still keep it on the ground.
6) Mark a line on a wall - it should start about 1 foot up and end about 4-5 foot up. Train on shooting and hitting that line from all possible angles and distances.
7) do 6) and vary between wrists shots and slap shots.
8) Pass the ball into a wall, take a direct shot on the bounce back. Preferably you want the pass to be coming into you from the side so it replicates the pass you would get in a game. Do this on both forehand and backhand.
9) Lift the ball against a wall and keep hitting volleys back at the wall. If its to hard, allow one bounce. Just work on your hand-eye co-ordination.
