BUSU receives national recognition

The University of Bath Students’ Union has recognised as one of the top 3 Students’ Unions in the country.

At a prestigious event held at the ThinkTank in Birmingham on 9 June 2008, the University of Bath Students’ Union was recognised as one of the top 3 Students’ Unions in the country.  The inaugural awards which were hosted by the National Union of Students and Endsleigh Insurance were established to ‘celebrate excellence’ in Students’ Unions nationally. The University of Bath Students’ Union beat off competition from across the sector to be among the 3 Unions shortlisted for the main award alongside the Students’ Unions from Sheffield and Leeds Universities.

The criteria used to select the 3 shortlisted Unions focused on evidence of the Union having a significant impact on its members. Such evidence included details of the Union’s planning processes; the mechanism to take feedback from students and act on this; levels of participation across activities and in elections; and the depth of influence and involvement in institutional affairs. The Judges included the outgoing President of the NUS, Gemma Tumelty and Stuart Etherington, the Chief Executive of the NCVO.

Ian Robinson, General Manager of the Students’ Union, who attended the event with the Union’s President David Austin and the Vice President Welfare and Campaigns, Eddie Bell, commented, ‘ I am proud that our Union, and the work of our Sabbatical Officers, staff and volunteers has been recognised nationally in this way. An award of this significance, which is judged by our peers is of particular importance as they, above all, understand the challenges and issues we deal with as an organisation. My thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in the work of the SU, and in particular our team of over 2000 volunteer students without whom we could not operate in such an effective way’.

The overall winner of the HE Students’ Union of the Year was the University of Sheffield Students’ Union.
