University of Bath Students’ Union awarded Silver for going green.

Students’ unions are leading the way in greening campuses and communities across the UK, according the latest findings of NUS’s green scheme.

The Sound Environmental Impact Awards seek to capture the positive green innovations in students’ unions and promote them to the general public. Standards and awards were presented at an Awards Ceremony NUS Services’ Annual Dinner at the Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool on 31 March 2010.

The University of Bath Students’ Union (BUSU) were awarded Silver coming in 6th place out of 83 Students’ Unions narrowly missing the gold award by a few marks.

Scarlett Seager VP Welfare and Diversity at Bath said: "We're so pleased to have made the Top Ten for the Sound Impact Award, it’s a fantastic achievement and being a determined bunch at BUSU we hope to make it into the Top Five next year!"

Over the past year BUSU we have lobbied the university on several environmental issues including the need for 'binless offices', a new cycle path for students and more recycling facilities. BUSU have also run several fun and highly successful awareness campaigns on Healthy Living and Mental Well-Being, which included a 'Fruit and Vegetable Catwalk show' as well as a visit from the BBC and a celebrity chef, Gizzi Erskine, who performed a cooking demonstration to students on our campus. Additionally, BUSU have recently started selling 'ButtOuts' in the Students’ Union shop so that those who do smoke can dispose of their cigarette ends in an environmentally friendly way. All of these issues have helped lead to Bath gaining the Silver award.

Susan Nash, NUS’s Vice President Society and Citizenship said: ‘With fifty-five unions reaching our Silver standard, we have demonstrated that we have collectively made a really positive impact on the environment’.

The union with the highest score was Edinburgh University Students' Association, credited for getting the University to ensure that medicines developed on campus are provided at cost to the world’s poorest countries. BUSU will continue to work hard on green issues with the aim of achieving a gold award at next year’s ceremony.
