Dos and Don’ts
Do…
1. Seek permission from the marketing department before embarking on any advertising campaigns.
2. Be creative! No one pays attention to boring posters or flyers, you have to win people over. Think about why they should give you their time or money.
3. Ask for advice on poster or flyer designs. We will be happy to help you out with ideas or answers on more technical matters if you are struggling
4. Be enthusiastic! Talk to people when you are flyering, why should they get excited about your society or event if you aren’t yourself!?
5. Plan ahead. There is no point in just putting posters up on the day you are doing something and expecting thousands of students to turn up. The more notice you give us in the marketing department, the more we will be able to help you!
6. Be pro-active! Planning a social? Think about where you want to go in advance and try and get a venue or two on your side. Come and talk to us in the marketing department to discuss ideas and suggestions.
7. Feel free to discuss any new ideas you may have on advertising matters with the marketing department. We are always happy to consider new ways of promoting things to students.
Don't...
1. Begin postering or flyering without first seeking authorisation from the marketing department.
2. Put posters up anywhere other than on the designated poster boards (a list of which is available from the marketing department).
3. Put posters up over the top of other people’s posters. Any posters covering others will be taken down.
4. Use blu-tac to put your posters up. It ruins the poster boards. Pins or staples only please.
5. Plan an event for a Wednesday or a Friday night (the nights of Score and Guppy respectively) if you want to be able to advertise it on campus.
6. Leave all of your advertising until the last minute and expect everything to be successful.
7. Isolate people through your advertising. Think about the student population and how you can make your club, society or event appeal to people.
8. Base your advertising for an event solely on cheap drinks offers. Any drinks offers promoted must also have a non-alcoholic alternative.
9. Set yourself a stall up at one of the tables outside the library without first booking it at the library front desk.
10. Assume that, because a company or business is paying you to promote them on campus, you can simply go ahead and advertise them without first clearing it with the marketing department.
