Top Tips
Just to start you off, here are a few things that you need to think about before you arrive:
Finances
You should have contacted your Local Education Authority (LEA) and the Students Loan Company (SLC) to arrange tuition fee payments.
If you don’t have a bank account, shop around for one with long term incentives – an interest free over-draft is handy for when times are hard.
Council Tax
As a student, you are exempt from paying Council Tax. If you are in University accommodation, this will be sorted for you. However, if you are moving into private accommodation, you will need to check with the landlord if you have been registered.

TV Licence
If you are going to be watching television in your own room, whether it be on a TV set or on your computer (via the University’s FreeWire service) you MUST have a TV licence. To purchase one and to find all the essential information go to the tv licencing website
Travel
Save money with a Young Persons Railcard which gives you 1/3 off all travel. The STA (student travel association) on campus offers competitive prices on many forms of travel.
Utilities
There are many utilities available for use for all students at the University. There are multiple laundry rooms, with washers and dryers. These are cheap to operate (we suggest saving 20p coins, as they are very useful!), and you need to use your own detergent and softener.
The Students’ Union also operates a dry cleaning service from the SU Shop.
There are facilities to recycle paper, tins, cans and glass in all the University kitchens, and the University also operates a weekly laundry service for any University owned bedding that you use throughout the year.
