International
Coming to live in the UK can be quite hard, and there are many things that you may be worrying about.
Here are a few tips that will help you start.
Bank Holidays
These are public holidays in England. In the academic year 2008/2009 these fall on the following dates:
- 25th December 2008
- 26th December 2008
- 1st January 2009
- 10th April 2009
- 13th April 2009
- 4th May 2009
- 25th May 2009
The University is also closed on the following dates
- 29th December 2008
- 30th December 2008
- 31st December 2008
- 14th April 2009
TV Licence
In England, you need to have a licence to own and watch a television. Any device that receives television signals (analogue, digital or satellite) must be licensed. This includes any computer that receives the University’s FreeWire service. For more information, and to buy your licence, visit the TV Licensing website
Insurance (possessions and health)
This is essential, and can often be forgotten in the rush and excitement. The Students’ Union suggests that you consider Endsleigh , who offer competitive student quotes both for your possessions while staying in University accommodation or while renting private accommodation.
If you are on a course lasting six months or more you can get free treatment from the National Health Service (NHS), including free examination and hospital treatment, from the beginning of your stay. Register with the University Doctor as soon as possible.
