Counselling

Sometimes problems or difficulties arise which may be helped by discussion in a supportive, confidential environment. University counsellors are available, by appointment, to talk in confidence about personal and emotional concerns, which can affect your life as a student and your ongoing academic progress. Talking in this way to an independent person, who is not there to judge or advise, can help you find your strengths, become aware of your patterns of behaviour, and ultimately, your solutions and decisions.

You can talk to a counsellor about anything that is causing you to feel worried or distressed. Some students have used counselling to help them through:

  • transitions
  • homesickness
  • loneliness
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • bereavement
  • making a difficult decision
  • problems with studying or exams
  • exploring the past, and the ways it has affected them, in order to move forward
  • difficulties connected with cultural identity
  • managing eating disorders, alcohol or drug problems
  • changing relationships
  • addressing issues concerned with sex and sexuality
  • building self confidence
