Become an Academic Rep

***Academic Rep Nominations are now closed for this year. There are vacancies for some positions – speak to you departmental administrator to see if you qualify for any of these.***
Academic Representatives are students, chosen by their fellow students, on their course and on the same year, to raise student issues at department and University-wide level. Participating in Academic Representative Elections gives you an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard! Among the first in the UK, our students union will hold these elections online.

Academic Rep 2008/9: “Being a Rep has helped me in a number of ways: developing a variety of skills, ehancing my employability and increasing my understanding of how departments and the University work while enabling me to network with other Academic Reps.”

Why become a rep?

  • Make your voice heard.
  • Influence university policy and learn how decisions are being reached in the "business world".
  • Improve communication, negotiation and problem solving skills.
  • Receive training through SORTED.
  • Free lunches at Academic Council.
  • Get your academic rep hooded sweatshirt.
  • Enhance your CV.

Among the first in the UK, our Students’ Union will hold the voting for Academic Representative Elections online . A link to Academic Representative Elections will appear on the Academic Section of BathStudent.com at the beginning of each academic year.

Who can be an Academic Rep?

Any student at the University of Bath can put themselves forward to become an Academic Rep, to represent the views of their fellow students in their year.
What is involved in being an Academic Rep?
There is an Academic Rep job description available to give you an insight into the skills that you could expect to develop as an Academic Rep and to see what it involved from benefits of being a Rep to the time commitment involved.

How is Academic reps' role recognised?

As an Academic Rep you are also a volunteer and as part of IiV (Investors in Volunteers), Bath University Students' Union (BUSU) ensures that there are procedures to support volunteers. To find out what rights and responsibilities are available as a volunteer, see SU Volunteer Policy.

How to nominate yourself?

Each candidate is expected to write a motivation statement (manifesto) which is not to be longer than 100 words. Along with a photograph, the manifesto should then be uploaded to the elections section of BathStudent.com.

When and where are Academic Rep elections held?

Nominations take place during Week 1 of Semester 1. You can nominate yourself and encourage all of your coursemates to vote. Voting takes place during Week 2 of Semester 1 and the results will be posted online.
