Academic Council
Eight times during each academic year, academic reps from across the university gather at Academic Council to raise and discuss students’ problems and concerns. Academic Council is viewed by the university as the most important forum for gathering student opinion. During meetings, students give their views on university decisions and policies which enables the SU to lobby policies in line with the student opinion.
Students often find reassurance when hearing their peers having experienced similar problems in other departments. Academic Council offers a platform to help finding a common solution to students’ worries and concerns. Meetings are held separately for undergraduate and postgraduate students which helps both groups concentrate on problems which are more relevant to them.
What can Academic Council achieve?
For example during the academic year of 2007/8, the academic representatives looked at different methods of feedback which could solve students’ dissatisfaction of feedback as a part of assessment. The Academic Council also put pressure on the university to refurbish specific rooms and lecture theatres. For further information see
minutes of academic council.
Academic Council’s main functions
- Generate new ideas
- Identify and respond to common academic and course-related problems
- Help improve learning and teaching provided by the university: ensure quality assurance (QA)
- Enhance good practice between different courses and departments
